Soumitra Ponkshe is a Senior Associate with the Technology in Banking practice at Spice Route Legal.
Soumitra has spent the better part of his career working with India’s largest banking and non-banking companies on technology issues that haunt this sector. He regularly advises clients on outsourcing and partnerships, product development and structuring, financial sector regulations, embedded finance, insurtech, payments and lending, commercial contracts, tech licensing projects and more.
Soumitra's regular clients include many of India's largest banks, payments companies, securities brokers, insurance companies, and fintechs. He has helped structure many of the more innovative solutions in embedded finance.
Outside of his specialised role in Technology in Banking, Soumitra has a keen interest in media and entertainment space, where he works closely with tech giants, digital platforms on content regulation, talent contracts, distribution strategies, and high-value IP-driven transactions.
Representative matters:
- Advised India’s largest commercial bank on a USD200 million+ outsourcing contract for the development of a proprietary core banking system.
- Assisted the world’s largest card payment solutions provider in navigating the Indian regulatory framework pertaining to the operation of the Account Aggregators Ecosystem.
- Advising the national flag carrier airline of India on multiple large-scale technology licensing arrangements, including negotiating a complicated payment arrangement with JP Morgan in the United States.
- Assisting a leading global pharmaceuticals and agricultural products company with the launch of an online platform for the 10-million farming community to make agriculture more predictable through access to technology and financial data.
